A transfer is a copy, not a handover. The tool that moves your data to a new phone says so in one line of small print: when it finishes, the old device still holds everything it sent. That is the right default and the wrong assumption — because the phone you are about to sell, hand to a child, or leave in a drawer is not empty.
The same listing also shows the transfer is not everything you own, depending on how you connect.
The line that mattersRead it before you wipe nothing
Samsung Smart Switch Mobile, description supplied by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
“Maintained” is doing all the work. Nothing is removed on the way out. That protects you from a failed transfer eating your photos — and it means the old phone leaves your hands exactly as full as it was.
What actually movesTwo lists, and they are not the same list
Same description.
That is the wireless set. The app’s own store picture puts the two options side by side, and the difference is not small.

Wireless, as the app labels it
- Contacts
- Photos
- Videos
- Calendar events
- Reminders
The quick route, over the air.
Cable adds, per the same screen
- Files
- Notes
- Messages
- Alarms
- Voice memos
- Safari bookmarks
- Music
- Home Screen layout
The listing’s own wording: “You can use the USB connector to send more items when connecting.”
Two honest caveats about that second column. The list is what the developer advertises, not a guarantee about your specific model or Android version — the description hedges with the word compatible for settings, and the app only runs against a Galaxy target. And encrypted or app-internal data is its own story: a note inside a third-party app is not a file the mover can see.
It does not sign you out of accounts on the old phone, does not remove chat histories, and does not clear the email account still cached with a signature preview of your doctor. Then it does not wipe the device, because a migration tool that deleted your data on success would be a terrifying tool. Both facts point at the same missing step, which is yours.
The order that makes it safeBoth phones before the old one leaves
- Finish the transfer, then use the new phone for a week. The retained data on the old device is your safety net; do not cut it before you have confirmed the banking app, the photos and the one thread you cannot rebuild.
- Decide deliberately about the cable list.Messages, notes and voice memos are the items people assume travelled and then discover did not.
- Sign out of accounts on the old phone.Logging out is not the same as wiping and it is the step that protects a phone you keep using as a media player in a drawer.
- Factory reset before selling, giving away or trading in.The transfer leaving data behind is the whole reason this step is not optional.
- Then check the two things nobody checks:that the old phone’s cloud backup was not your only copy of anything, and that deleted items in the new phone’s “recently deleted” are gone by the time you let anyone else hold it.
| What people assume | What the listing says instead |
|---|---|
| “I moved it, so the old one is clear” | Data of the sender device is maintained after transfer |
| “Everything came across” | Two different lists depending on wireless or cable |
| “I signed out when I wiped it” | Not a claim of this tool at all — the reset is a separate step you take yourself |
Samsung’s support site was not reachable from the network used to write this, so nothing here names a menu, an exact button, or a device compatibility list. The quoted lines and the two transfer lists come from the app description and the developer’s own store image, which describe the wireless path and note the USB connector carries more items. Whether any specific thing travels on your pairing is a question for your two phones, and the safe answer is to check before the old device leaves your hands.
- All quoted sentences — the app description Samsung Electronics supplies for its own store listing, retrieved from the store’s public catalogue interface and compared word for word with this page.
- One store image — supplied by the developer; the caption transcribes what each of the two connection options says it transfers.
- Our own reading — the copy-versus-handover framing, the five-step order, and the beliefs table. Not vendor instructions, and not results of a migration we performed.
